Veil Patterns

Step 1: Get Ready

You will need the following:
Materials:One Heirloom Veil Kit
Optional: Embellishment KitVeil Pattern, and Cutting Mat

Approximate Time: 2 Hours for primary veil, 2-4 hours for beading placement, additional time for drying of glue.

Examine your veil kit. READ entire instructions at least once before beginning. Make sure there is no disruption from draft, children, pets, etc. Clear a workspace area of at least 5'X 3'. If on the floor, preferably a smooth surface such as wood, tile, or vinyl. A large dining table can also work well.

Making a single layer veil.

Step 2: Measuring and Cutting...
Place the end of the measuring tape at the location on your head where you plan to secure your veil. Shorten the tape measure until it dangles where you want your veil to end. Look on the tape measure and identify the length for your veil. Check your measurement against the norms shown below:

Blusher/shoulder 20"-26"
Waist 30"
Fingertip 36"
Floor 72"
Chapel 90"
Cathedral 120"-144"

Lay the tulle out folded along its length. With the measuring tape, measure the length that you need and cut straight across both layers. If in doubt about the length, leave extra length. You can always shorten if you need to. Round off the outside corner edge. You can do this free hand. If you need some help, flip a large dinner plate face down and follow the edges of the dish.

Step 3: Embellishments...
Unfold the tulle. Starting from the center, apply your beading to the veil. Some options to consider are a scattered effect over the entire veil. Or you may wish to apply only along the outer edges. Beading can be spaced further apart at the top of the veil since the gathers will diminish the exposed areas. Conversely, you should decrease the beading spacing along the bottom edge of the veil. Fabric-Tac is washable. Just make sure to follow the manufacturers application directions and drying times. Great thing about this product is it dries clear!

Step 4: Putting it all together...
Thread the needle with approximately 6 feet of thread (3 feet when doubled over). Weave the needle through the tulle along the straight edge, approximately 1/2" away from the edge and leaving a tail of approximately 6" of thread where you first insert the needle. Tip, to keep your thread from accidentally slipping through, wrap a piece of masking tape on the end. Gather the tulle as you go and weave across the entire length of the tulle. Snip the thread, leaving 2 feet on the needle and 1 foot with the tulle. Knot the two ends of the 1 foot piece forming an 8" loop. Evening out the tulle, you should now have a 4" length of gathered tulle to attach to the comb. Attach the tulle to the top rounded side of the comb making sure that the teeth of the comb is pointing away from the tulle. This can be accomplished with the same weaving stitch that was done during the gathering process. A better stitch is a criss-cross stitch.

That's it! Your veil is done.

Making a double-layer veil:

Step 1
See above.

Step 2: Measuring and Cutting
Measure from where you plan to attach your veil the two lengths that you want. If you plan to use one layer as a blusher, then measure from the point where the veil will be attached and proceed over your face to where the blusher will end. Add the two measurements together and add about 8". Remember, you can always trim back, but you can't add on. Measure along the lengthwise fold of the tulle and cut amount of tulle needed. Round off both layers of tulle along the outside edge at both ends. See step 2 above for tips on rounding the edge. Open up the tulle and fold along the width of the tulle leaving the appropriate lengths for the blusher. Apply beadwork as desired.

Step 3: Embellishments...
See Step 3 above. Also, if you will be using as a blusher, remember to keep the beads away from your face. Keep the beadwork along the edges.

Step 4: Putting it together...
See Step 4 above. This will be performed along the folded width connecting the two layers.

Making a triple-layer veil:
Follow the instructions to make 1 single layer and 1 double-layer veil.

If you are planning to have a detachable blusher, then use the instructions for the single layer veil with the measurements for the shortest length. If you want a detachable train, use the single layer veil for the longest veil length.
